- The Kundiman Music
The Kundiman Music in our country is very known for its melody that is characterized by a smooth, flowing and gentle rhythm with dramatic intervals. Kundiman is originlly spelled as Cundiman which is a genre of traditional filipino love songs and was traditional means of serenade in the Philippines. Kundiman song came to the fore as an art song at the end of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century. We also have some famous Filipino composers such as Francisco Santiago and Nicanor Abelardo, the ones who formalized the musical structure nad sought poetry for their lyrics, blending verse and music in equal parts. Some Scholars believed that Kundiman is originated from the Tagalog province of Balayan, Batangas. The father of the Kundiman is Dr Francisco Santiago, his work "The Development of Music In The Philippines" is the reason why this song called Kundiman. Our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal used Kundiman in his very famuos novel ' Noli Me Tangere'. In 1896 to 1898 the most famous Kundiman arose, which fired the patriotic sentiments of the tagalog revolutionaries in the struggle for liberation from spanish colonial rule, this was Jocelynang Baliuag which is the favorite Kundiman in Bulacan during 1896 that gave its title "Kundiman Of the Revolution". Officially known as Musica Del Legitimo Kundiman Procedente del Campo Insurecto( Music of the Legitimte Kundiman that Proceeds from the Insurgents).This Kundiman shows a love and courtship song, it features lyrics dedicated to a young and beautiful Filipina idolized in the Bulacan.
